One of eight Rocky Mountain states, its gold and silver deposits brought prospectors here hoping to make their fortunes, leaving behind the 'ghost towns' that give colour to Idaho's romantic history. Yet in later days it claims to mine more silver than any other part of the USA. In an area of less than a quarter of a million square kilometres, there are greater forests, deeper canyons and swifter rivers than in many of its bigger cousins. Even the mighty Shoshone Falls on the Snake River, at 61 metres, is even higher than the famous Niagara. Although land-locked, a good part of the region is made fertile by a criss-cross of rivers and dominated by timber and agriculture. Its beautiful and often overlooked scenery make this one of the nation's hidden gems!

Silver Spur Ranch

Silver Spur claims to capture the spirit of the west more than any other ranch. Only eight guests at a time or one family as a single group stay at any of three authentic cow camps, used by cowboys since the turn of the century. At Warm Creek Cow Camp the accommodation is in a renovated one-room rustic log schoolhouse with a wood-burning stove and a bathhouse. This camp also serves as the cookhouse, where home-style cooking is simple, wholesome and appetising, and said to be 'the best you ever tasted'! Riding is in the company of working cowboys and offers a hands-on experience of a long established western lifestyle. There is no set programme and guests join in regular chores of rounding up stray cattle, tending to calves - with a herd of 2000 head there's always something new to be done every day. Children come only as members of a family and should be old enough to join with adults in the riding and work programme. Cattle drives, horse drives and colt-starting head off from Medicine Lodge, the hub of Silver Creek, rounding off at the end of a hard-riding week with a visit to a rodeo and perhaps an overnight stay at Jackson Hole. Like the lifestyle, entertainment is informal and maybe relaxing by the fireside is all that's needed after a working cowboy day.
