This is a chance in a life time to help capture, count and check wild African game in the Ants Hill/Nest annual census of wildlife, September 9th – 16th.
Guests arrive at leisure and do an activity of their choice in the afternoon. Sundowners will be served on the deck at Ant’s Hill for all guests during which a brief presentation will be done by one of our guides, on the census and relocation of the game species and information on nature conservation. This will be followed by dinner
The first day will be spent with the capture of sable. That evening Ant’s brother in law, Dr Philip Calcott will be conducting a night sky safari. Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered what the heck it is that you’re seeing? Well, in the UK the answer is mostly a lot of reflected street lights, but here in the Waterberg things are different. We have some of the darkest skies in the world, and clear cloudless nights to see them as well. The result? The full splendour of the universe is laid out before us. Using an advanced modern telescope he would love to introduce you to the amazing Waterberg night sky with his guided tour of its wonders
The following 3 mornings thereafter will be the game census with guests divided into about 8 groups with 2-3 guests and staff in each group. This will be done in either game drive vehicles or on horseback.
The afternoons can be spent at leisure doing the activity of their choice, i.e. game drives, walking, riding, mountain biking or just relaxing next to the pool.
In addition guests will be able to either enjoy a cultural farm tour, this is actually more than just a farm tour, Charles Baber, Ant’s father, is renowned throughout the Waterberg area for his local knowledge, hospitality and sense of humour, will share will give you a personal introduction to farming and life in our area or alternatively a game drive in a nearby big 5 game reserve.
The following two days and last afternoon, there will be buffalo capture and relocation on horseback and a giraffe capture and relocation
On the last evening there will be a wine tasting done with some of South Africa’s finest wines followed by a special themed dinner, “Out of Africa”.
The above is a rough schedule of how we foresee the week to pan out but due to unpredictable factors (weather, animal behaviour etc) the schedule may be altered accordingly. Keep in mind that due to the above factors capture can sometimes last longer than planned.
