Largest
of the continental United States, within its 250,000 square miles everything
in Texas seems bigger than life-size. And nothing stands taller than the
legend of the cowboy. From its infancy Texas was founded upon cattle ranches
where the renowned Texan cowboys mounted up to round up and drive the
herds, and traverse its far reaching territories on horseback. Still a
vital part of modern times, today's visitors can experience this lifestyle
on a guest or working ranch, and the excitement of a rodeo - an action-packed
thrill, born in Texas back in 1883. The lone star state has a mild climate
that offers ample opportunities to explore its wide-open spaces, lush
forests and rugged mountain peaks, marvel at its great cities, discover
charming small towns. And take a break to go swimming and bird watching
from the Texan beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. |

Bar H Ranch |
|
For three generations, The Hommel family have worked and called this rugged and scenic land in the heart of the Texas Panhandle home. Now they have opened their doors to offer you an opportunity to share life on an authentic working Texas cattle ranch. Depending on the season, you will have the opportunity to watch the cowboys work cattle, feed the livestock, mend fences, move the herd and engage in dozens of other ranch chores. You can climb in the saddle and join in the work and experience real cowboy life. If you would rather spend your day relaxing, you can take a leisurely horseback ride across the rolling prairie, sit on the porch by the swimming pool, take a stroll along the creek, hike or bike on one of the challenging trails, pitch horseshoes, play volleyball or wander down to the fishing hole. Custom made wagons and a safari jeep provide comfortable tours of the ranch for guests who are not partial to a saddle. The ranch has fantastic birding opportunities with up to 60 species seen in one day on this ranch! The ranch is also a game preserve with buffalo, coyotes, raccoons, deer and armadillos, these being just a few of the animals you are likely to encounter here. Climate-controlled cabins with private facilities and a bunkhouse await guests ready for a good nightÕs sleep, all furnished in true western style. At the end of the day, you can watch a magnificent sunset settle across the broad horizon. Be sure to try the mesquite-grilled steak with all the trimmings, just one of the favourite home made dishes that are on offer. Sit around a crackling campfire and soothe the body and the mind, as the crickets and the coyotes call and the stars begin to twinkle in the big clear Texas sky.

Lazy F Ranch |
|
Owned by the same family for six generations, the 2500-acre Lazy F was home to infamous outlaws of the 1800s. The wagon tracks of the legendary Camino Real can still be seen across Lazy K land and it is said that Santa AnnaÍs gold-laden wagon train is buried somewhere on the ranch. An ancient rock fault running through the southern part means you could collect your own treasures of agate, jasper and quartz. The lifestyle is easy-going or energetic, as you please. Join in the everyday working ranch chores, rounding-up, roping and branding cattle! Of two guest suites in the main house, one has a whirlpool bath, the smaller one an upstairs bathroom. The guesthouse has four bedrooms with private baths and up to 16 bunks can be provided in the barn, with a shared bathroom and shower. Also in the main house, you can meet around the living room fireplace, watch cable TV on the mezzanine or play cards in the garden room. Mounts at Lazy K are good cow horses and riding instruction is available for beginners. Children of 12 years and upwards can ride with their parents but there is no special children's programme. Mealtimes are informal, with wholesome ranch fare passed around 'the family' of residents and visitors. Fishing, hiking and hunting can be arranged, and shopping trips and visits to a leather goods factory or a western wear store. On the ranch you can explore on foot or horseback two creeks lined with oak, elm and pecan trees, swim in the pool, play volleyball or simply sit by the campfire on Haunted Hill, listening to ranch owner Clay Allen's tales of Indian folklore.
