With fewer than half a million residents, there are more deer and antelope than people in America's 9th largest state! It's easy to relive in your imagination scenes from famous novels and films set in this 'cowboy country' and its atmosphere is captured in the state emblem of a Stetson-waving cowhand astride a bucking bronco. Yellowstone National Park is in north-west Wyoming and attracts almost 3 million visitors each year to its wild and open landscape and to marvel at the world-famous Old Faithful geyser. Less well-known but equally stunning are the mountains and lakes of Grand Teton Park. If you are fascinated by the history of the Wild West, the memorabilia collection of the Buffalo Bill Historic Centre at Cody is a must on your itinerary of essential sightseeing. And if you want to be where the horse is king, looking out of place if you are not wearing jeans and a Stetson, Wyoming beckons you.
THE HIDEOUT AT FLITNER RANCH
GREYBULL - WYOMING
Guest/Working Ranch
This authentic cattle ranch of over 100,000 acres is at the heart of the beautiful Shell Valley on the slopes of the Big Horn Mountains. Here you'll be welcomed as one of the family, living the cowboy life but with the added comfort of luxury accommodation. Two guest rooms in the three-level lodge and five rustically elegant duplex cabins all have private facilities. To these have been added the recently opened Upper Hideout. A day's horse ride from the valley, the second ranch and its new cabins are as equally luxurious as those at Flitner but, set high up in mountains, the stunning views can only add to your enjoyment. A two or three day stay here can be combined with the rest of your vacation at the main ranch. Beer and wine are included with the appetising western fare, appreciated after riding ranges from meadowland to mountain trails. You can also work with the ranch's crew as they doctor livestock, check fences and waterholes, and move cattle between pastures. Children are also welcome at Flitner but a minimum age of 10 years is suggested before they ride their own horses. In spring and autumn, experienced riders may consider joining a round up of over 1,100 head of cattle. Fly fishing, skeet shooting, airboating, archery and rodeo events in the ranch arena are great diversions, while in the evening you might be entertained by local musicians or take a moonlit hayride or a trip to Cody.

GOOSEWING RANCH
JACKSON - WYOMING
Guest Ranch
Only an hour away from Jackson and the airport, in the isolation of Gros Ventre River Valley - part of the Yellowstone Plateau - The Goosewing marks the entry to a pristine wilderness of North AmericaÍs wildest country. Unchanged for a century and more, this is home to a wonderland of wild game. Bison, elk, moose, mountain sheep, antelope and bear are all here, with majestic eagles swooping overhead. Goosewing is a neat working ranch accommodating around twenty-five guests at one time in eight private cabins and a family size log cabin for larger groups. The main lodge with its handsome stone fireplace is the meeting place for dining and relaxing. Its French-born owner enhances Goosewing's reputation for seasonal meals of excellent quality and variety, complemented with an ample cellar of vintage wines from as near as California and as far as Burgundy. An extensive programme offers all year round riding for short and long distances. The foreman in charge of the horses will find the right mount and saddle for each rider, giving instruction in the arena before venturing out to where deer and antelope graze in lush meadows by the trail to Cottonwood Creek and Gunsight Pass. Riding along Sportsman Ridge passes the old cabins and corrals built by the mountain men who first explored the territory. Meanwhile, the younger guests will learn to ride and rope, ready to star in their own end of week rodeo. Day-care for infants is also available by prior arrangement. Photography classes, bird watching, and guided fishing trips are alternative pastimes, with occasional talks by an expert naturalist or geologist. The swimming pool and hot tub are always popular. Then after dark, guests gather in the loft bar to play pool, watch TV or simply enjoy the good company. Cookouts under the night sky are accompanied by the music of cowboy guitars and, in the distance, the cries of coyotes - a fitting end to the day, at Goosewing Ranch.

PARADISE GUEST RANCH
BUFFALO - WYOMING
Guest Ranch
In the valley of the Big Horn National Forest and alongside the French and Three River Creeks, Paradise is aptly named, in its tranquil setting, with the only sounds to interrupt the peace are the calls of wildlife – and the sounds of families having fun! The ranch offers the rustic flavour of the Old West along with many modern conveniences.
With nine to twelve separate rides each day, guests can enjoy walking, trotting or cantering and with no more than seven guests per ride, this means that you can select your own pace and style. A pack mule accompanies all day rides with food for lunch on the trail. 6-12 year olds can ride with adults or on their own programme, which includes a weekly campout and a rodeo with a gymkhana. Parents can supervise under 6’s or lead them around the ranch on ponies.
For non-riders or as a change from riding, the ranch has a range of activities, including a heated outdoor swimming pool, an indoor whirlpool spa, volleyball, badminton and horseshoe games. For angling enthusiasts, a 4-day fishing trip can be added to a ranch stay. Single occupancy bookings are best during a 3-week ‘adults only’ programme in September, as no single supplement applies.
Accommodation is to be found in 18 luxury log cabins, each having a living room, kitchenette, fireplace and porch, offering one, two or three bedrooms.
Ranch style family meals offer as much as you can eat of hearty western home cooking. As well as family-style dining, there are also real mule-drawn chuck-wagon dinners and cookouts to enjoy. The ranch has a well-stocked saloon. Singsongs around a bonfire, square dances and talent shows are just some of the evening entertainments you can look forward to.

KLONDIKE RANCH
BUFFALO - WYOMING
Guest/Working Ranch
Presently owned by Richard and Patty, the Tass family has welcomed visitors to Klondike since the 1920s. The ranch was founded in 1886 and stands below the towering Big Horn Mountains, where the clear waters of Crazy Woman Creek flow through green pastures and groves of cottonwood trees. In this land of historic legends, to the north is the site of Fort Phil Kearny, scene of the Fetterman Massacre and the Wagon Box Fight, and to the south is Outlaw Cave - hideout of the infamous Hole-In-The-Wall Gang and featured in the Butch Cassidy film. On visits to these sites, Patty is the narrator of their colourful past. Accommodation (maximum 16 guests) is in large three-bedroomed cabins, each with shared bathroom and living area, plus a new one-bedroomed cabin with private bathroom and living area. Guests join with the family for breakfast, noonday dinner and supper. Three hearty meals to satisfy hungry cowboys and girls. Each rider has the same saddle horse for the duration of his or her ranch holiday. Riding is incorporated with all the chores of a working ranch, moving cattle to new pasture, checking animals and fences. Visitors can take part in any of these activities, or choose to explore on horseback or ride up in the mountains to camp overnight. At the end of the day relax those aching limbs with a soak in the ranch's hot tub. Fishing gear is provided and the angling is superb along two miles of a 'blue ribbon' trout stream, where wild rainbow and German brown trout abound. Still and video cameras are encouraged, to record the rare moments of meeting whitetail and mule deer, elk, moose, beaver and porcupine. A telephoto lens is a must, to catch any of a tremendous variety of birds in flight. Rodeos are much favoured here and the professional events at Sheridan, Buffalo and Kaycee often feature stars of the national rodeo scene. Local ones are fun too, when ranch families take part while visitors applaud. Stargazing at Klondike is a serious pastime, when a celestial spectacle of constellations, meteors and even the Milky Way can be seen clearly against the night sky above this peaceful ranch.

BITTEROOT RANCH
DUBOIS - WYOMING
Guest/Working Ranch
?This ranch has some of the best riding in North America and is located in a remote valley in Wyoming's Absaroka Mountains. The ranch is ideal for people who want to experience this spectacular and wild country from the back of a horse.
The ranch both raises cattle and many of its own horses and the ranch endeavours to operate a three horses to one guest ratio, so you are assured a willing and responsive ride. The horses are trained Western style but English tack is available and for advanced riders there is also a cross-country course available for use in the week with over 80 jumps, and obstacles including ditches, oxers, pickets and walls. For the less experienced rider, lessons are available which help to increase awareness, overall enjoyment and confidence. Other riding activities include team sorting, cattle drives, pack trips and trail rides.
The rides are normally for 2-3 hours in the morning and afternoon as well as a scheduled all day picnic ride once a week and most weeks there will be an opportunity to herd cattle. The ranch also provides the option of having video taped lessons on two mornings during the week. For safety reasons the ranch does operate a strict hard hat policy for riding.
Fishing, hiking and relaxing are available if you would prefer. There is also a small family farm with sheep, llamas, ducks, geese, chicken, peacocks, dogs and cats… a firm favourite with the children.
The ranch limits guests to a maximum of 30 people in twelve charming cabins, each with private facilities and most with wood burning stoves and views of the surrounding mountains. Guests gather in the main lodge for meals and relaxing evenings. A special effort is made with the cuisine. Salads and many of the vegetables come from the garden, ranch-raised beef and lamb is served with homemade bread. Wine is also served with dinner.

THE BUCKING S RANCH
ALCOVA - WYOMING
Working Ranch
This authentic working ranch is located in the heart of Wyoming at an altitude of 6,000 to over 8,000 ft., surrounded by mountains and in the middle of open range cattle country - out here cattle have right of way even on the road and they make use of it. You can go on endless rides and all you will encounter are cattle pastures, mountains with beautiful natural rock formations, creeks, lakes, abundant wildlife and rugged beauty all around. The cattle are run in common with the neighbour's place and together they take care of about 500 pairs (1,000 head) on a total of 40,000 acres. Mid-May the cows with their calves are shipped back to the ranch after wintering on a farm in a milder climate, they are then branded and vaccinated before they are driven to their spring pastures. From mid-May to mid-October they are moved approximately every two weeks to new pasture as grazing conditions and water dictate. Depending on your experience you can walk, trot, and canter across tens of thousands of acres - there is no nose to tail riding on the ranch. You can get involved in the daily ranch work as much or as little as you like - e.g. sorting, branding and doctoring cattle or even fixing fences. There is also plenty of scenic riding and maybe you can even go on an overnight pack trip. The accommodations are excellent and you will have your own authentic duplex cabin with private facilities and porch with all round views of the spectacular countryside. The main ranch house, a beautiful log home, is open to the guests at all times. The atmosphere is casual and you can enjoy your evenings relaxing in front of the fireplace sharing your dayÕs adventures, reading a good book or shooting some pool. Also, you will find a hot tub for your relaxation after a long day in the saddle. A world-class blue-ribbon "wild" trout fishery and one of the best fishing holes in Wyoming are only a few miles away. You have endless opportunities for hiking, rock climbing and mountain biking. In the evenings you can participate in cookouts where you can sit around the campfire swapping cowboy stories. There is always time for yard games like volleyball or softball, throwing horseshoes or practising roping skills. If you just like to kick-back and enjoy the ranch atmosphere, you'll find plenty of cozy and comfortable places to wind down.

T-A GUEST RANCH
BUFFALO - WYOMING
Guest/Working Ranch
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the restored Victorian buildings have a charm of their own. In the spring of 1892, a battle between the cattle barons and Johnson County residents saw the start of a range war, which was finally concluded at the T-A ranch, where bullet and lookout holes in the barn can be seen to this day. Owners Earl and Barbara Madsen and their staff ensure a welcome that is second to none. The accommodation is excellent, with twin or double rooms and private bathrooms, in the cook's suite with two bedrooms and an adjoining bathroom and shower, and the bunk house where there are five bedrooms with private baths, a kitchen and living room - well suited to families. The granary has been converted to house a two-bedroom suite and a double room, both with private bathrooms. Meals of plentiful Western fare with freshly baked bread and desserts are served family-style. In the evenings it is a real treat to take a ride after a good dinner, then return to the ranch for dessert by the campfire. The riding programme is designed for beginner or expert. Wranglers introduce guests to work on the ranch. Range riding and roping are daily operations that visitors can take part in. There is no separate childrenÍs programme and riding is best started at over 8 years of age. High country fishing in the mountains or for trout at the ranch's riverside can be the angler's choice. Backpacking trips and exploring historic Old West sites will attract the adventurous, while the T-A RanchÍs activity centre stages film shows, music and 'living history' events. A spacious building with floor to ceiling windows, the centre is an ideal place to enjoy the panoramic views of the Big Horn Mountains. Special activity weeks are held from time to time, focusing on cowboy culture, The Johnson County War and Native American history, with guest presenters displaying artefacts, storytelling and skills teaching. For a get-away break or a ranch adventure, the T-A ranch has much to offer.
