With
fewer than half a million residents, there are more deer and antelope
than people in America's 9th largest state! It's easy to relive in your
imagination scenes from famous novels and films set in this 'cowboy country'
and its atmosphere is captured in the state emblem of a Stetson-waving
cowhand astride a bucking bronco. Yellowstone National Park is in north-west
Wyoming and attracts almost 3 million visitors each year to its wild and
open landscape and to marvel at the world-famous Old Faithful geyser.
Less well-known but equally stunning are the mountains and lakes of Grand
Teton Park. If you are fascinated by the history of the Wild West, the
memorabilia collection of the Buffalo Bill Historic Centre at Cody is
a must on your itinerary of essential sightseeing. And if you want to
be where the horse is king, looking out of place if you are not wearing
jeans and a Stetson, Wyoming beckons you. |

Bucking S Ranch |
|
|
This authentic working ranch is located in the heart of Wyoming at an altitude of 6,000 to over 8,000 ft., surrounded by mountains and in the middle of open range cattle country - out here cattle have right of way even on the road and they make use of it. You can go on endless rides and all you will encounter are cattle pastures, mountains with beautiful natural rock formations, creeks, lakes, abundant wildlife and rugged beauty all around. The cattle are run in common with the neighbour's place and together they take care of about 500 pairs (1,000 head) on a total of 40,000 acres. Mid-May the cows with their calves are shipped back to the ranch after wintering on a farm in a milder climate, they are then branded and vaccinated before they are driven to their spring pastures. From mid-May to mid-October they are moved approximately every two weeks to new pasture as grazing conditions and water dictate. Depending on your experience you can walk, trot, and canter across tens of thousands of acres - there is no nose to tail riding on the ranch. You can get involved in the daily ranch work as much or as little as you like - e.g. sorting, branding and doctoring cattle or even fixing fences. There is also plenty of scenic riding and maybe you can even go on an overnight pack trip. The accommodations are excellent and you will have your own authentic duplex cabin with private facilities and porch with all round views of the spectacular countryside. The main ranch house, a beautiful log home, is open to the guests at all times. The atmosphere is casual and you can enjoy your evenings relaxing in front of the fireplace sharing your dayÕs adventures, reading a good book or shooting some pool. Also, you will find a hot tub for your relaxation after a long day in the saddle. A world-class blue-ribbon "wild" trout fishery and one of the best fishing holes in Wyoming are only a few miles away. You have endless opportunities for hiking, rock climbing and mountain biking. In the evenings you can participate in cookouts where you can sit around the campfire swapping cowboy stories. There is always time for yard games like volleyball or softball, throwing horseshoes or practising roping skills. If you just like to kick-back and enjoy the ranch atmosphere, you'll find plenty of cozy and comfortable places to wind down.

Goosewing Ranch |
|
Only an hour away from Jackson and the airport, in the isolation of Gros Ventre River Valley - part of the Yellowstone Plateau - The Goosewing marks the entry to a pristine wilderness of North AmericaÍs wildest country. Unchanged for a century and more, this is home to a wonderland of wild game. Bison, elk, moose, mountain sheep, antelope and bear are all here, with majestic eagles swooping overhead. Goosewing is a neat working ranch accommodating around twenty-five guests at one time in eight private cabins and a family size log cabin for larger groups. The main lodge with its handsome stone fireplace is the meeting place for dining and relaxing. Its French-born owner enhances Goosewing's reputation for seasonal meals of excellent quality and variety, complemented with an ample cellar of vintage wines from as near as California and as far as Burgundy. An extensive programme offers all year round riding for short and long distances. The foreman in charge of the horses will find the right mount and saddle for each rider, giving instruction in the arena before venturing out to where deer and antelope graze in lush meadows by the trail to Cottonwood Creek and Gunsight Pass. Riding along Sportsman Ridge passes the old cabins and corrals built by the mountain men who first explored the territory. Meanwhile, the younger guests will learn to ride and rope, ready to star in their own end of week rodeo. Day-care for infants is also available by prior arrangement. Photography classes, bird watching, and guided fishing trips are alternative pastimes, with occasional talks by an expert naturalist or geologist. The swimming pool and hot tub are always popular. Then after dark, guests gather in the loft bar to play pool, watch TV or simply enjoy the good company. Cookouts under the night sky are accompanied by the music of cowboy guitars and, in the distance, the cries of coyotes - a fitting end to the day, at Goosewing Ranch..

The Hideout at Flitners Ranch |
|
This authentic cattle ranch of over 100,000 acres is at the heart of the beautiful Shell Valley on the slopes of the Big Horn Mountains. Here you'll be welcomed as one of the family, living the cowboy life but with the added comfort of luxury accommodation. Two guest rooms in the three-level lodge and five rustically elegant duplex cabins all have private facilities. To these have been added the recently opened Upper Hideout. A day's horse ride from the valley, the second ranch and its new cabins are as equally luxurious as those at Flitner but, set high up in mountains, the stunning views can only add to your enjoyment. A two or three day stay here can be combined with the rest of your vacation at the main ranch. Beer and wine are included with the appetising western fare, appreciated after riding ranges from meadowland to mountain trails. You can also work with the ranch's crew as they doctor livestock, check fences and waterholes, and move cattle between pastures. Children are also welcome at Flitner but a minimum age of 10 years is suggested before they ride their own horses. In spring and autumn, experienced riders may consider joining a round up of over 1,100 head of cattle. Fly fishing, skeet shooting, airboating, archery and rodeo events in the ranch arena are great diversions, while in the evening you might be entertained by local musicians or take a moonlit hayride or a trip to Cody.

TA Ranch |
|
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the restored Victorian buildings have a charm of their own. In the spring of 1892, a battle between the cattle barons and Johnson County residents saw the start of a range war, which was finally concluded at the T-A ranch, where bullet and lookout holes in the barn can be seen to this day. Owners Earl and Barbara Madsen and their staff ensure a welcome that is second to none. The accommodation is excellent, with twin or double rooms and private bathrooms, in the cook's suite with two bedrooms and an adjoining bathroom and shower, and the bunk house where there are five bedrooms with private baths, a kitchen and living room - well suited to families. The granary has been converted to house a two-bedroom suite and a double room, both with private bathrooms. Meals of plentiful Western fare with freshly baked bread and desserts are served family-style. In the evenings it is a real treat to take a ride after a good dinner, then return to the ranch for dessert by the campfire. The riding programme is designed for beginner or expert. Wranglers introduce guests to work on the ranch. Range riding and roping are daily operations that visitors can take part in. There is no separate childrenÍs programme and riding is best started at over 8 years of age. High country fishing in the mountains or for trout at the ranch's riverside can be the angler's choice. Backpacking trips and exploring historic Old West sites will attract the adventurous, while the T-A RanchÍs activity centre stages film shows, music and 'living history' events. A spacious building with floor to ceiling windows, the centre is an ideal place to enjoy the panoramic views of the Big Horn Mountains. Special activity weeks are held from time to time, focusing on cowboy culture, The Johnson County War and Native American history, with guest presenters displaying artefacts, storytelling and skills teaching. For a get-away break or a ranch adventure, the T-A ranch has much to offer.
